The joy of dyeing

As I have developed my interest in fiber art, my heart has turned from using mass-produced fabric toward using dyes and paints to manipulate the original material. This has led to my trying out silk-painting, shibori, and low-water immersion dyeing. It is bliss!

Here are a few examples of my work.

Silk painting feels a lot like watercolor (at least to me). The color reacts differently, depending on whether or not the silk is wet or dry, how much water you include with the paint itself, etc. This is one of my first attempts.

This muslin was dyed a lemon yellow. Then soy wax was applied with a stamp. Finally, the fabric was over-dyed with turquoise to get that vivid green.

This is a detail from a silk scarf dyed fuschia, stamped with soy wax and over-dyed in dark gray.

This silk painting is 21" x 21". The painting uses Dye Na Flo paint and a gold water-based resist.
